2019 BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Your 2019 Board of Directors was elected in November 2018.
Ashley (she/her) has lived in Bloomington for 14 years. She lives with her husband and their two children. Ashley is one of the founding members of Monroe County NOW and is currently serving her second term as Chapter President. She is proud of the work Monroe County NOW has accomplished and is looking forward to 2019. Some highlights of 2018 for her are being able to bring several educational opportunities to the Chapter, as well as tabling/co-hosting events in the community.
Ashley decided to step up and run for Monroe County Council in 2018. Though things did not turn out in her team’s favor, they have much to be proud of. Ashley has found a love of politics and is looking forward to running again in the future as well as getting other women elected to office.
When not working on activist efforts or political campaigns, you can find Ashley working at Shine Insurance Agency as a Client Happiness Specialist. She loves the work she does, her co-workers, and their clients. In Ashley's limited free time, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends, taking hikes at McCormick’s Creek State Park, making art, and reading a good book.
Cathi (she/her) is an unapologetic feminist. She has lived in Bloomington nearly 30 years and has been a social justice advocate and activist since the early 90s. She served on the Bloomington Commission on the Status of Women for 12 years, 8 years as Chair. She has campaigned door-to-door for numerous local women’s campaigns. Cathi’s biggest political honor to date was serving as the only female Hillary Rodham Clinton delegate from the 9th District of Indiana to the National Democratic Convention. She’s been a volunteer at Middle Way House (MWH) since 1995 as a victim advocate, and also served on the MWH Board, including serving as Chair. Cathi was fortunate enough to volunteer for the National NOW office in 1996 while living in DC for a work assignment. Her activism includes LGBTQ+ (member of the Regional Committee of Indiana Equality during its formation) and Racial Justice (active member of Blacks in Government since the mid-90s). Social justice is Cathi’s passion. She also enjoys staying active, currently focusing on Olympic lifting, though she has skated roller derby, done aerial yoga and hula hooped with the Hudsucker Posse. Who knows what’s next? (By the way, during the day she’s a mechanical engineer.)
Alexa (she/her) was born and raised in Bloomington. She graduated from Indiana University and currently works in Real Estate. She's been a self-proclaimed feminist since third grade, and is also a vegetarian and animal rights activist. She believes it's important to be politically engaged. She often volunteers for political candidates; helps, hosts, or attends fundraisers; and serves on the Indiana NOW PAC. Other things she enjoys doing include writing, reading, dancing, watching the sunset, and cuddling with her rescue cats.
Natalia (she/her) is originally from Chicago, but now considers herself very much a Hoosier, having lived in Indiana now for most of her life. Upon leaving Bloomington after undergrad, she returned in August 2017 to volunteer in the IN9 House race, along with some other state and local races. She was impacted by her time as a volunteer for IU Dance Marathon and believes in trying to make the world a little better than how she found it. Natalia enjoys her Bravo shows, cheering loudly both in parades & for the Black Key Bulls, sending “just because” notecards in the mail, Italian ice and making things look pretty.
Director of Communications
Mandy (she/her) is an accidental activist, which began in late 2016 as an original convener of Monroe County NOW. She previously served on the Leadership Council and as the Liaison Chair to the Legislative Action Committee. Mandy has also been the chapter newsletter editor since the beginning.
Mandy came to Bloomington in 1996 and never left, receiving her BA and MLS from Indiana University. She stays busy as a wife, stay-at-home mother, fitness instructor, and volunteer. Mandy teaches Pilates and barre classes at the Monroe County YMCA and regularly volunteers at the Monroe County Public Library.
Director of Legislative Action
Brigitte (she/her) is a part time chemistry professor and stay-at-home mom to three tiny humans. As a scientist, her natural inclination is to gather as much knowledge as possible before acting - so the legislative monitoring committee is right in her wheelhouse! This knowledge will allow our NOW chapter to target legislation that we would like to support or oppose and time our actions for maximum impact.
director of Membership/Outreach
Abby Ang (she/her) developed her activism on the leadership committee of Indivisible Bloomington + 9th District and the Democracy for Monroe County Board of Directors. Over the past year, she has also worked on a number of different political campaigns, ranging from the Indiana Democratic Party coordinated statewide campaign to Amy Swain’s campaign for state representative.
Abby moved to Bloomington six years ago to attend Indiana University as a full time PhD Candidate in the Department of English. She is working on a dissertation focusing on 12th-15th century human-insect encounters across medieval literary genres.
Director of Fundraising
